Whether you’re coming over to Brooklyn (awesome) or you’re watching from television screen @home, you can check out the different firework effects.

Have a Happy (& safe) 4th of July!

(I set this post for tomorrow, 7/4. Let’s see what happens…)

Automated Color Theory

July 3rd, 2008

Here’s a color palatte creator site I “stumbled upon” today (all by myself actually, aka sans StumbleUpon this time!) It could be old, could be new, but the point is that if you haven’t checked this out already, you’re missing out. Go make a color palette- or a pattern swatch!

There seems to be a new trend toward tools for designers that are popping up all over the place. If you haven’t tried Getty’s Moodstreams yet, GO… now! Its super cool. It has this entertainment quality about it. So while I am searching for images or movies, I watch the mood changing. There are sliders for different specifications, such as length of clip.

There are probably about a hundred other tools out there. These are merely examples to demonstrate the possibility and proclivity right now toward this kind of thing.

The only thing that really bugs me is that none of these tools were around back in the day (circa 1999) when I used to do graphic design!

Could you live with your trash for 365 days?

July 2nd, 2008

This guy has done 6 months so far w/ 365 Days of Trash.

I remember, years back, when my undergrad graphic design professor made a comment along the lines of this: I wonder what would happen if people had to live with their trash. Would this compell them to recycle more? Consider more eco-friendly alternatives? Develop a less wasteful existence?

Seems other people have been thinking the same thing..

“The idea for this project came about six months ago as I was throwing something away in the garbage. It occurred to me that I was doing nothing more than that. I was making it go away, not dealing with it, not accounting for it, simply removing it from my sight. When you think of it in simple terms like that, it’s really quite insane

There’s a ticker on the site and apparently a CTA for others to save their trash, as well. So far, looks like not too many people are into saving their trash.

As for me… while I believe this to be a very interesting and thought-provoking (potentially good-habit-forming) project, something tells me the landlord would not approve.

FYI- if you do not want to live with your garbage, you could always go see a robot movie.

(Hooray for today- the birthday of my sustainability blog category! I cannot believe I didn’t have one before.)

Happy Canada Day! (or Fête du Canada)

July 1st, 2008

Canadian Flag

Today is Canada Day, or Holiday of Canada (if you prefer the French translation.) People also refer to this day as Canada’s birthday.

Once upon a time, ~140 yrs ago… the British colonies of Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and the Province of Canada (Ontario & Quebec) teamed up to make 4 provinces. Canada was kind of like its own kingdom on that day, however, it took until 1982 for the actual Constitution Act.

Since British Parliament kept certain amounts of control during the 115 years in between those dates, there isn’t a clear-cut date of Independence, as with some other countries.

While we’re on the subject, here are some more Independence Days to celebrate this month: Algeria (July 5), Argentina (July 9), Bahamas (July 10), Belarus (July 3), Belgium (July 21), Burundi (July 1), Cape Verde Islands (July 5), Columbia (July 20), Liberia (July 26), Peru (July 28), Rwanda (July 1), São Tomé and Príncipe (July 12), Slovakia (July 17), Unites States (July 4) and Venezuela (July 5).

Back to Black > Back in Shape

My friend, Victoria, challenged me to a fitness competition. And you know how I love a little healthy competition (no pun intended.) The race is between the two of us and will last for 1 month, starting yesterday. “Most weight lost overall” wins and loser has to buy the other person a new pair of jeans. Those are the rules.

It started out with those basic parameters and I agreed. Why not? I’m running anyway. Why not eat healthier too? Now we have a blog (perfect timing because IX is unreliable), hosted on Wordpress and it turned into this insane documentation process of diet and workout routines and other resources to track our progress.

More and more people are becoming involved in the process- still only her and I actually competing- and it is great. So, yeah. I’m TOTALLY cheating on my regular blog, but just for 1 month. Then I swear I’ll break it off.

I’m just sayin’.

(Unless, of course, you still harbor animosity. If that’s the case, I recommend you stick to Alanis.)

seriously, IX… WTF.

This was all I saw on my blog today from about nine in the morning until now. Not cool, IX Webhosting.

Old Running Data- How Embarassing!

May 12th, 2008

nikeplus.jpg

I tend subscribe to the thought of leaving the past where it is- in the past. Its just “water under the bridge.” And “tomorrow’s a new day.” Whatever. Do what you can and then move on. Right? Now if only my Nike+ iPod would agree with me!

It has been a couple of years now, that I have been running with my iPod, adding the Nike+ around the end of summer 2007, and have just recently begun to run again (you know, when the temperature is actually >40 degrees.) Sometime during the winter, I had lost my sensor and since then have acquired a new one. Everything seemed to be working fine- it logged my workout and uploaded the data to iTunes just like before. Only this time, my new workout data would not upload to Nikeplus.com automatically via iTunes. (Something to do with the multiple sensors and version upgrade is probably the issue and I think I found the answer on Apple Forum today.)

You are probably thinking, so what? Really, how important is that for your data to be uploaded instantaneously and for it to be accurate and available online? It depends. Who’s looking at the data? Apparently, everyone on facebook can currently view my old running data via the Facebook Nike+ App that I added the other week, which (coincidentally) doesn’t currently display the date of the run. For all they know, this was the data from run I did last night (which, btw, has improved to average 8min/mi.)

<sigh> Okay, I know my Facebook friends will not judge me on my running capabilities, however, the fact that this data is on view does, in fact, increase the priority of this issue.

Recently, Ovü and I made it into the Jorno do Brasil. Pretty cool.

Because driving on the road is *so* last decade.

Unveiled at the 2008 Electric Aircraft Symposium in San Fran, Boeing proposed a new form of transportation. Think: Jetsons, only no one has to actually “drive” it. Or Back to the Future, without the time travel. Plus, it will be energy-efficient! (powered by either battery or electricity)

“Boeing’s research group is designing a [car-plane] hybrid aimed at travelling up to 300 miles at a time. It will use precision navigation systems that would allow the average ‘driver cum pilot’ to fly without special training thanks to a computerised ‘flight instructor’ built into the cockpit.” Read More
