A Diagram of Relationships

A Venn Diagram (John Venn) is an illustration that shows all of the possible or logical relationships between sets, or groups of things. They are most often represented by overlapping circles. (According to this one I found on a Google images search, humans *may* eat bugs.)

Here’s another great example of the Venn (by Jessica Hagy of Indexed):

If the circles don’t intersect, then it’s not a Venn diagram… which can be a very sad thing if you’re a circle (by Threadless T-Shirts.)

Euler Diagrams (Leonhard Euler), on the other hand, are diagrams used to represent sets and their relationships- not necessarily made up of intersecting circles. Euler diagrams may overlap or not.

This example of the Euler Diagram explains the geographic terminology used in that area of the eastern Atlantic that confuses Americans. Quite interesting, if you ask me.

Nokia Maps 2.0 (Pedestrian != Vehicle)

interface

Mobile mapping software (already I am excited.) Nokia Maps 2.0- this version is even cooler than the first, offering pedestrian navigation, multimedia city guides and supposedly improved user interface- which remains at the top of my ToBeTested list of mobile apps. It works with the hardware, using the compass to tell you which way you’re going.

There were so many complaints of earlier versions of this app and their predisposition toward automotive directional assistance and not enough directional tailored to the folks on foot. Lo and behold- the alleys are labeled now and you can never ever complain again about getting lost… unless, of course, your battery dies.

Blog Version Update Saga: Day 6 (- weekend)

Okay, so I took the weekend off, finished painting my entire room (finally, not just the one wall) and spent some time thinking about a lot of things, including how might one go about finding the location of the .htacess file. No epiphany, no light bulb. I’m still right back at the same place I started. What an awful feeling.

The good news is that I can upload images from external AND internal image links. Wheee! (Note to self: Check permissions settings on folders BEFORE banging head against keyboard. This prevents you from having to explain those funny, little key-shaped marks on the top of your forehead the next day.)

Blog Version Update Saga: Day 3

outside image link working. check. okay, its definitely a linkage issue between the php and the database.

“You should update your .htaccess now.” Thank you, Wordpress, for the gentle reminder but WTF does that mean.

新年快乐 (Happy New Year!)

This is the Year of the Rat (February 7, 2008 and ends on January 25, 2009.) It is supposed to be a time of hard work, activity and renewal. Rats are considered to be very observant and self-reliant, thus making this year a time of the “survival of the fittest.” Excellent. Now tell me something I want to hear.

Images: Coming Soon to a Blog Near You

So, it seems like the image issue is due to a linkage problem somewhere either in the database or in the folders on my server. There was an error on the image upload within the site admin, in addition to the (how i love auto-save! focus, katie, focus.) login images that are nowhere to be found.

Here’s my troubleshooting to-do list:

1. find out where wordpress images are stored and verify that they’re present
2. go into the php file for one of the pages w/missing links (prob login would be best) to make sure the links go to the same place
3. if links do not go to same place, change them so they do
4. once images are working, go ahead and upgrade to v2.3.3
5. pray that nothing else goes wrong

Happy happy joy joy.

The blog is working again! (albeit a few images have suddenly disconnected from their source files- minor details.)

Nice auto save features and tagging, I am noticing. If you have a wordpress blog, go ahead and install the upgrade. (Just make sure you back-up EVERYTHING, including the DB and move to your desktop, so as not to confuse old files with newer ones.) Oh, and make sure to put a smart friend of yours on speed dial.

There are no words to describe how happy I am right now. Now, for those image links…

Total time spent on troubleshooting: 8 hrs.

More devices are becoming mobile-friendly. In fact, even public toilet locks can be controlled by txt messaging! (if you’re in Helsinki, that is.) The lock system, called the Sanomat, was put in place in hopes to decrease vandalism. It is currently in effect at the rest areas along Highway 1 in Paimio and Salo near Turku.

I think its fabulous. ACCOUNTABILITY is a major factor in the maintenance of public spaces. Since each time the door is opened, the person who opened it is linked to the phone number and therefore linked to the time of day, the graffiti is now linked to a specific mobile number. Excellent.

I wonder why, if someone really wanted to write on the wall, they wouldn’t just use someone else’s phone to open the door. Could something like this lead to higher rates in mobile phone theft? What if, instead of a deterrent, there was some way to use the mobile phone to create part of a collective art piece that labels your contribution accordingly. Hm, I smell a social networking mobile bathroom project.

He loves me, he loves me not.

“In the good ol’ days one would sit in a field surrounded by daisies and dandelions, sighing tearfully into the wind, while questioning the daisy about whether your current love was true. Nowadays with fields in short supply and daisies considered a weed, one must be more inventive about these things.”

“Without losing the whole flower thing completely, Yanko Designs have create a digital version, the Instant Feeling Concept. It’s a strange title for an odd product, as every time you rip off a petal it bursts into flames, and the final one left answers your question.” -Read full article from ShinyShiny
